What is the DJI Matrice 100 and why should I care about it? Because it’s the future!

Before we go into the details, let me just say that this drone is not a Phantom 3 or inspire 1 replacement. From what I understand, the DJI Matrice 100 is a drone that gives people a relatively simple platform with the potential to do anything you can think of. It’s not just for aerial photography, agriculture, search and rescue or inspection. It was designed to be for whatever you can think of.

Multiple Expansion Bays
Expansion bays will allow you to add additional computing power, cameras, communication devices, sensors and more.  The Matrice 100 will feature universal power and communication ports such as CAN bus and UART.

Dual Batteries
The Matrice 100 will use smart batteries similar to the Inspire 1. With the ability to instal two batteries at the same time, you should be able to achieve 40 minute flights. This would be great for long distance travel, or if you have a heavy payload that usually cuts your flight times in half. The batteries will also be able to be slid back and forth to adjust weight distribution.

Reduced Vibrations By 50%
For weight reduction and rigidity, the Matrice 100 is made from carbon fiber. The arms will have a new vibration dampening material that eliminates feedback from the motors, making everything on the craft stable and vibration free.

Customizable Long Range Remote
The remote will probably have a lot of the same electronics as the Inspire 1 remote, including Lightbridge, integrated GPS, 2Km range and DJI Pilot app support. It could also have more expansion ports like the Matrice 100 does.

Guidance: A Revolutionary Sensor Kit
DJI Guidance is a new array of positioning sensors that will allow real obstacle avoidance! From this leaked Photo, it appears to have 5 ultrasonic sensors and 10 cameras allowing the system to see with a 360 degree field of view).

Here are some leaked features for the Guidance system:
Guidance will continuously sense its nearby environment along with any obstacles or obstructions in real time. This will allow Guidance to take full control of the aircraft and avoid obstacles even at high speeds.

Hovering accuracy will be within centimeters (without GPS). Using stereoscopic image processing algorithms, the Guidance system will provide 3D position information over almost any terrain at any speed. The Guidance positioning system will also be capable of operating at an altitude of up to 65 feet, but other features like obstacle avoidance would still work at even higher altitudes.

Guidance will allow you to get all the most useful info out of the system to use for whatever you want. Additionally, Guidance will also be fully compatible with the DJI SDK. Using USB and UART, you’ll be able to export data like velocity, obstacle distances, grey‐scale images, IMU info, ultrasonic distances and depth images to whatever device you have for further processing.

SDK Support
With all of the advanced features and expandability of the Matrice 100, the only way of fully unlocking the potential of this platform is to have a software development kit. We don’t know much about the Matrice 100, but I can only assume that DJI is going to make all of the necessary aspects of the Matrice ope

n source and keep most of the hardware closed with strict guidelines for their accessory bays (like how Apple does things).

Pricing is unknown for sure, but a website called UAV Outlet has it listed for $3000. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the real price, but don’t quote me on it. After adding additional sensors and accessories, I could easily see this drone costing over $5000, but you have to remember that this is not for the average consumer.

The Matrice 100 is officially released, it will most likely be on DJI’s website.

Why I’m Confident That This Is Real
A lot of people are probably asking themselves “why would DJI come out with such an advanced, expensive and generalized product?”. Developers, that’s why! While the Matrice 100 may be a surprise to most of you, SDK developers have been asking for a system like this since the beginning of the year.

Back in January, DJI sent out a questionnaire asking what they should do with the latest drone they’re working on. They asked questions like “what is your expected flight payload? What type of flight platform do you prefer? What will you use the flight platform for? How necessary is it for the aircraft to automatically detect and avoid obstacles?”. This basically confirms that the Matrice 100 is not something that DJI randomly decided to develop without a purpose.

De Phantom 3 is de nieuwste camera Drone van DJI innovations. De DJI Phantom 3 is in 2 varianten te koop, namelijk de Advanced en de Professional versie. Het verschil tussen de Advanced en Professional zit hem in de camera. De Advanced neemt de camerabeelden op in 4K (30fps max.), de goedkopere Advanced maximaal in 1080p HD (60fps max.). Beide modellen maken 12 Megapixel foto opnames.

Camera Gimbal
De Phantom 3 is standaard voorzien van een camera met 3-assen gimbal. De gimbal zorgt ervoor dat het beeld recht en stabiel blijft tijdens de luchtopnames. Deze camera gimbal is zo goed, dat het eigenlijk niet te zien is dat het toestel beweegt. De beelden blijven ook door onverwachte bewegingen van bijvoorbeeld wind super strak.

Tablet/iPad met DJI Pilot software
Doordat je een tablet op de zender kunt plaatsen met daarop de DJI Pilot app ben je in staat om HD video real-time vanuit de Phantom 3 te bekijken. Zo weet je direct welke beelden er opgenomen worden en/of het juiste onderwerp goed op de foto komt. Camera instellingen kunnen tijdens het vliegen gewijzigd worden. Tevens kun je op de tablet diverse zeer nuttige informatie aflezen zoals GPS en Accu status, vluchtduur enz.

Hoe ver en hoog kan de DJI Phantom 3
De Phantom 3 kan een afstand en hoogte halen van rond 2Km dankzij de ingebouwde DJI lightbridge. Uiteraard is deze afstand afhankelijk van diverse factoren. Nabij een stad is het bereik aanzienlijk korter dan op het platteland. Het mooie is dat ook de Video connectie hetzelfde bereik bedraagt waardoor je live je HD beelden kunt bekijken over een grote afstand. In de praktijk blijkt dat 100 meter vaak al een hele leuk afstand is.

DJI Inovations maakt inmiddels al jaren Drones met camera en is bij vele bekend van de ultiem populaire DJI Phantom 2. DJI heeft zichzelf en vele andere nu overtroffen met de DJI Inspire 1.

De DJI Inspire 1 is eigenlijk een compleet re-design van de quadcopter waarbij alle pijlen zijn gericht op gebruikersgemak en hoge kwaliteit lucht foto en video. DJI richt met de Inspire One op het middensegment en vult daarmee het grote gat tussen de DJI Phantom serie en grotere professionele camera drones heel goed op. Er zijn diverse bijzondere features in verwerkt die voorheen alleen beschikbaar waren in de professionele markt.

Zodra de DJI Inspire 1 opstijgt valt direct op dat deze tijdens de vlucht kan transformeren. In de lucht klappen de poten van de Inspire1 omhoog, niet alleen uit aerodynamisch oogpunt, maar dit geeft de camera 360 graden vrij zicht. Hierdoor kan in alle richtingen gefilmd worden zonder obstructie, ongeacht wat de vliegrichting van de Inspire 1 is. De Gimbal functioneert uitstekend en houdt de camera zeer goed gestabiliseerd. Doordat de Gimbal op 3 assen van gyro’s is voorzien kun je met veel wind vliegen, zonder dat er trillingen bewegingen of schokken in het beeld te zien zijn. De 4K video’s uit de Inspire camera Gimbal is werkelijk een lust voor het oog!

De ingebouwde camera van de Inspire One kan filmen met een resolutie van 4K (Ultra HD) en fotograferen met 12 Megapixels. Net als de grote DJI S900 en DJI S1000 kan de Inspire One ook voorzien worden van dubbele besturing. Dat betekend dat een piloot en cameraman samen kunnen maken en de taken kunnen verdelen. Zo kan de piloot zich 100% op het vliegen concentreren en de Cameraman doen waar hij het beste in is!

Buiten de video camera voor filmen is deze DJI drone ook voorzien van een tweede camera. Dit is een camera met DJI’s Optical Flow Technologie. De camera is voorzien van extra ultrasoon sensoren die  continu naar beneden kijken en helpt de drone te stabiliseren en de Inspire One op zijn positie te houden. Ideaal als er geen GPS signaal is of indoor gevlogen wordt.

De DJI Inspire 1 is voorzien van het Lightbridge systeem waarmee realtime 720p HD video uit de camera gimbal naar de besturing wordt doorgegeven tot een afstand van 2Km.
Deze beelden kunnen bekeken worden op een smartphone of tablet en zelfs instellingen kunnen direct worden gewijzigd. Hierdoor kunt u altijd de perfecte shot maken. Het is wel te adviseren om een nieuw en snel tablet model te gebruiken. Met name de iPad Mini Air  kan de 4K beelden prima weergeven.

Een Inspire 1 heeft een vliegklaar gewicht van ongeveer 2,95Kg inclusief 4500Mah LiPo accu. De maximale vliegsnelheid bedraagt 22 m/sec bij windstil weer en kan stijgen met ca 5 m/sec. Het hoogteplafond zit op 4,5km en de vliegtijd is circa 18 minuten op een enkele accu lading.

Inmiddels is er ook een upgrade accu van 5700Mah beschikbaar. Hiermee wordt de vliegduur met enkele minuten verlengd. De laadtijd van deze accu is overigens ook iets langer vanwege de hogere capaciteit.
